I was still at school. I asked my athletics coach if I could be excused the match against Felsted (I think). He refused, so I pulled a sickie. The intention was that I drive my mates to the gig but my parents refused to lend the car. I was incensed! We got the train.

The gig was incredible, probably the best I have seen. Bowie at a students’ gig. He body surfed. And then 6 months later, Bowie was playing at the Royal Festival Hall (see my other Bowie ticket).

He played many of the songs from the album, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars which was released later on 16 June 1972.
